Istanbul, Turkey – June 22, 2010 – The International Burn Foundation (IBF) today awarded the Tanner-Vandeput-Boswick (TVB) Burn Prize for 2010 is Professor David M. Heimbach, M.D. of Seattle, Washinngton, at the Congress of the International Society for Burn Injuries in Istanbul, Turkey. The prize consists of a $100,000 cash prize and  a gold and diamond pin designed by the late Dr. J.C. Tanner.

“The International Burn Foundation was pleased to receive a number of highly qualified international applicants for the 2010 TVB Burn Prize representing six different countries across five continents. Dr. Heimbach was selected for his remarkable and enduring contributions to the field of burns,” according to a statement from Jane Boswick-Caffrey, Chairman of the IBF, “his contributions to the field have played a significant role in education, training and research, and he has been a highly influential physician in the field of burn treatment.”

 “Winning the most prestigious prize for Burn Care is the apex of my career in burn care. The TVB prize puts me at the feet of my heroes and mentors who have been previous awardees – giants all – John Burke, Charles Baxter, and Basil Pruitt. To join this “club” is an honor beyond words” said Dr. Heimbach. He continued “Their leadership and inspiration have brought burn care out of the back halls and wards of neglect to a primary surgical specialty of excellence, and they have been the champions of the Team Approach to multidisciplinary care.

 Dr. Heimbach went on to discuss the importance of the team approach to Burn Care: “The American and International Burn Societies have recognized the team by offering full membership to all members of the burn team, rather than just to physicians and surgeons. To be considered a part of this revolution along with the above honored Fathers of Modern Burn Care makes this truly the most exciting event in my career.”

About the Tanner-Vandeput-Boswick (TVB) Burn Prize;

The TVB Burn Prize was established in 1984 by the late Dr. J.C. Tanner of Atlanta, Georgia.  Dr. Tanner, assisted by Dr. Jacques Vandeput, invented the Tanner-Vandeput mesh dermatome, a device that enables skin grafts to be expanded to replace a larger area of a patient’s skin destroyed by burns.  The prize is the legacy of their contribution and promotes the mission of the IBF by honoring individual achievement in the field of burn treatment.  The IBF was created to promote and administer the TVB prize.  Dr. Tanner honored the contributions of the late Dr. John Boswick, first Chairman of the Foundation, by adding his name to the prize.  The prize is quadrennial and will be given out again in 2014
